Edition originale; l'un des 500 exemplaires numérotés sur vélin d'Angoulême glacé (après 5 Japon et 10 Hollande)...Thadée Natanson, (1868-1951), was the co-founder in 1889 of La Revue blanche, with his brother. He married the famous muse Misia Godebska in 1893.Provenance: Natanson estate.Thadée Natanson, né à Varsovie en 1868, est issu d'une riche famille polonaise émigrée à Paris. Avec ses deux frères Alexandre et Louis-Alfred et leurs camarades du lycée Condorcet, il fonde en 1889 une revue entièrement dédiée à la poésie, La Revue Blanche. Il épouse Misia Godebska en 1893, laquelle devient rapidement la "Reine de Paris". Le couple reçoit des personnalités du monde artistique et littéraire de la Belle Époque, notamment Stéphane Mallarmé, Félix Vallotton, Toulouse-Lautrec, Octave Mirbeau ou encore Marcel Proust.. Son engagement en faveur d'Alfred Dreyfus lui fait perdre de nombreux soutiens et La Revue Blanche fait faillite peu de temps après son divorce avec Misia en 1905. Lightest shelfwear; near fine in chipped, lightly soiled, edge-worn, good+ dust jacket. A novel of infidelity, bigamy, Malta, callous Englishmen, and doomed love. In 1927, a British publisher offered a prize for the best novel written by an undergraduate of Oxford, or Cambridge, University. The Committee of Judges discovered that, out of all the manuscripts received, 'one stood out so eminently above all the rest that a suspicion arose as to whether it might not have been written by some experienced novelist and therefore submitted unfairly in this prize competition. The judges decided, in order to prevent a hoax being perpetrated on them, to invite the author to London on the pretext of talking over the manuscript. Imagine their astonishment when a pretty girl of eighteen walked into the room. No one had ever thought of the author as being a woman, but this slip of a girl, a regular student [at] Oxford University, was the author.' The author was Helene Du Coudray, a Russian immigrant, who was born Helene Heroys in Kiev in 1906. She spent her childhood in St. Petersburg, and was exiled to England at the age of twelve. After being graduated from Oxford, she settled in Geneva where her fluency in languages enabled her to work first as a translator, and then as a biographer. She published three other novels, and a major biography of Metternich. This book was first published in 1928, by P. Allan and Co. and immediately went into four printings in England. This is the first American edition, which was published from the British sheets. It has recently been re-published by Maia Press; however, copies of original editions are now exceedingly scarce. .

Dos lisse orné. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Filets d'encadrement sur les plats. Jolie reliure Louis XV. Bon exemplaire. L'éloge historique, qui s'étend jusqu'à la p. 70, se poursuit par les pensées et bons mots de Saint-Foix. Saint Foix servit jusqu'à 36 ans chez les mousquetaires, et fut célèbre pour ses duels. Il fut historiographe du roi, dramaturge. Son ouvrage le plus célèbre demeure les Essais historiques sur Paris. Ex-libris gravé aux armes non identifiées, sans doute étrangères. Armes écartelées avec un lion léopardé (peut-être couronné) sur 1 et 4, et 3 croissants (1 en chef deux en bas) sur 2 et 3. encadré de deux lions à dextre et à senestre de l'écu. Paris, Furne, Jouvet et Cie, (1868) ; in-8, demi-chagrin marron, dos à nerfs, caissons dorés avec un fleuron, tranches dorées (Quinet) ; 316 pp., seize lithographies en couleurs, protégées par des serpentes légendées. Edition originale de ce joli conte de fée sous-marine, inspiré probablement par les expériences de sous-marins pendant la première moitié du XIXè siècle, et de la création du scaphandre avec habit de caoutchouc de Cabirol en 1857. Né à La Flèche dans la Sarthe, Pierre de La Blanchère a fait l'école forestière ; il est garde général en 1848 et, à Nantes, il monte un atelier de photographie ; il sera chargé de photographier les poissons de mer et d'eau douce. A part quelques rares et très claires rousseurs, l'exemplaire est en bel état, très frais, dans une reliure de bon goût avec des illustrations bien inspirées. Peu courant dans cette condition.
